National Wiper Alliance introduces their QUAT KEEPER® Foodservice Towels powered with Gelest BIOSAFE® Antimicrobial Technology

February 6, 2020 –National Wiper Alliance, the industry leader in custom converting dry nonwoven towels for industries such as medical, food service, and aerospace, has selected Gelest, Inc., an innovator in materials science and the manufacturer of BIOSAFE® Antimicrobial technology to enhance their newly introduced QUAT KEEPER® Foodservice Towels.

Like so many other products NWA produces, the QUAT KEEPER® Foodservice towels are available in a variety of colors and fiber blends, including all-natural compostable fibers. Through third party labs, results have shown, treated by the BIOSAFE® antimicrobial technology, they are non-quat depleting and 99.9% cleaner than untreated towels during use. These food service towels are available exclusively through NWA.

A study [1] by NSF International found that 75% of kitchen towels were contaminated with bacteria compared to only 9% of bathroom handles. Damp towels with trapped food residue create ideal environment for bacteria, mold, and fungi to grow.

Sanitizing solutions, such as quaternary ammonium compounds, or Quat, commonly used in the food service establishment can clean the towels but cannot provide towels the protection against any growth of odor causing bacterial and mold during use.

The foodservice industry continues to be concerned with products, like all-natural towels, to be quat depletors. These products or towels cause sudden drop of the Quat level in sanitizing solutions below the mandatory level, which can result in serious food sanitation and safety issues.

“We selected Gelest’s BIOSAFE® antimicrobial technology because Gelest is the industry leader in developing antimicrobial technology for food contact uses “said Jeff Slosman, President of NWA. “When converted with our proprietary process, the BIOSAFE® treated towels do not deplete Quat like the untreated towels do.”

“Gelest and NWA joined forces and successfully developed a simple solution that renders towels with antimicrobial protection and non-Quat depletion benefit,” said Ken Gayer, Chief Executive Officer of Gelest. “We are proud NWA chose our industry leading BIOSAFE® antimicrobial technology for its newly introduced QUAT KEEPER® Foodservice Towel.”

BIOSAFE® antimicrobial technology is highly effective and safe to use. It provides treated towels with protection against unwanted bacteria and mold that can cause odor and stain. This technology is EPA-approved and has FDA exemption and NSF certification of food contact applications.

In addition to the food service industry and by partnering with Gelest, NWA has the opportunity to provide similar nonwoven products to customers in other diverse industries by utilizing the antimicrobial technology.
